MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR CONSERVATORY

Space and Style

A conservatory is a unique room in that it provides a transitional area between your home and your garden, allowing you to enjoy the world outdoors from the luxury of your house. However, this factor also means that conservatories can end up housing all manner of garden tools and equipment that can detract from the beauty of the room.

More often than not there is very little that anyone can do to prevent this from happening, but there are a number of ways in which any negative effect can be minimised - it is even possible to work the 'clutter' into the aestetic of the room, with a touch of creativity!

In larger conservatories it can be quite easy to accommodate additional storage space, through the use of sideboards designed to match or compliment your existing furniture. These can be used to store smaller garden tools, pots etc without impacting on the look of the room. If the space is available, it could even be worth while using screens or even large plants (real or artificial) to partition off a section of the room for storing gardening materials or other items.

The choice of furniture is a major factor in controlling the space in any conservatory. Smaller conservatories require lower backed furnuture that will create the illusion of additional height in the room (although such furniture might look out of place in a large conservatory).

It is also important in smaller rooms that you make the most of any space available. Coffee tables and side tables that also feature drawers or shelves beneath them are a great way to store anything out of view, while not taking up too much space.

If you want to store larger garden tools such as rakes or spades, in a smaller conservatory, you need to be a bit more creative. Wall racks or stands for the implements can make a nice focal point in a conservatory, but the tools need to be kept clean or they will end up spreading dirt around the room and will be an eyesore.

If your conservatory is still looking a little cluttered, you might want to consider the colours and patterns on your furniture. You should avoid darker cane colours or heavily patterned fabrics and keep to light colours that will brighten the room, making it feel more airy and spaceous.

Dark cane and patterned fabrics are excellent for controlling the space in larger rooms, but in the opposite way! These strong visual images provide a great focal point that help prevent large rooms feeling 'empty' or sterile.
